Road Trip Itinerary: Heart of America Along Two Great River Roads

The Mississippi River starts near Canada and runs more than 2,000 miles to the Gulf Coast. An especially scenic stretch lies along the Minnesota/Wisconsin border, where The Great River Road is dotted with sweeping vistas from 500-foot bluffs, historic villages, wildlife refuges, wineries, and antiques stores galore, not to mention fresh fish and great beer. There are two river roads along the Mississippi, actually—Highway 61 on the Minnesota side of the river, Highway 35 on the Wisconsin side—and the route to follow depends on how much time you’ve got. I’m going to suggest a two- or three-day itinerary that starts in Minneapolis, follows the Mississippi till it meets the Wisconsin River, then hugs the Wisconsin and ends in Madison. It’s a path that shows how different generations of Americans—from pioneers to industrialists to Frank Lloyd Wright—shaped America’s most famous river and the prairie nearby.
