The Obama administration decided to reverse the plan to allow offshore drilling in the Atlantic Ocean.

The US government will no longer open up a large swath of the Mid and South Atlantic coast to a new generation of oil and gas drilling. Oil producers such as BP, Shell, and Chevron will have their operations confined to the Gulf of Mexico.

"The Surfrider Foundation applauds the federal government's leadership on this issue. Offshore drilling is a dirty and dangerous practice that threatens the health of our oceans and coastal communities," stated the organization led by Chad Nelsen.
