New Room Uncovered in the Winchester Mystery House

Winchester

Sarah Winchester may have passed on almost a hundred years ago, but her infamous San Jose mansion continues to unfold with new and intriguing mysteries. The Winchester Mystery House’s preservation team recently discovered an attic space that had been boarded up for over a century. Winchester, who was trapped in the room at the time of the 1906 earthquake, sealed the room away believing evil spirits had caused the quake. The team found a number of artifacts including a pump organ, a Victorian couch, a dress form, a sewing machine and paintings.

Winchester, who inherited the Winchester rifle fortune, was famously convinced that she must constantly build her home in order to evade the spirits of those that had been killed by Winchester rifles. The sprawling, architectural curiosity has 161 rooms (including the newly discovered room), 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors, 47 fireplaces, 40 staircases, 13 bathrooms, and nine kitchens.
